[ It's difficult to know how to face Cynthia after how the trial went down. There's some shame here (no, more like a lot of shame), anger, and more than a handful of regret. She's always made him feel incredibly self-conscious about himself, but for right now he's too worried about her and Owain to put himself first.
So, sometime after the trial when he's gathered his thoughts, he knocks lightly on her door. ]
[well, it’s a good thing knocks get through, at least! She’s doing a little better than she was immediately post-trial, after some time, so when she opens the door she looks... not great? But at least a little more chipper than she did immediately after she left the trial room.]
Oh! Heya, Gerome! Wanna come in and see my great room?
[ the one sound that can be heard in a soundproof room in every murder game: knocking. lucky for everyone indeed that fists are so powerful when making contact with doors!
more seriously, he looks quickly looks her over. "not great" is, well, not great for cynthia. but it's a start. ] I suppose I could.
Nah, Atsushi showed up a little earlier and I let him check it out. I kinda want to show it off to literally everyone who decides to visit, though, because it rules.
So you weren't alone. [ more to himself than to her. he seems to take some comfort in this. ] Anyway, you don't have to wait for visitors to show it off. Why not leave your door open during the day and see who comes by?
Yes, we're fortunate to have Deirdre and Minerva with us. But I meant someone you could speak with. You're... [ bubbly, cheerful, light, social. ] ... far more of a conversationalist than I am. Company suits you.
[ he shakes his head dismissively. and. sits on the unicorn couch, he looks about as fitting on it as you'd expect from someone in a dark mask with dark clothing on a bright, cheerful unicorn couch. and as happy as you'd expect. ] You mean "Detective Cynthia"?
Yeah, it’s probably gonna be hard if we don’t... especially if we wanna talk to that ghost.
...
[she can’t really look at anything but the floor, maybe.]
I... no, not really. When they said there was an hour left and I didn’t know any of what was going on, I threw a vote in because I thought we’d be able to do something about it.
Cynthia... [ it's times like this he wishes he were better at comforting people. another light step takes him closer, then another, until he's close enough to settle his hand gently on her shoulder.
he's trying very hard to be soft here. ] You couldn't know, none of us could have.
...I... I guess not, but... I don’t know. I’m not good at this kinda thing, and I feel like I should’ve learned from that one time I mixed things up back home, but... what if it keeps happening like this? That we just don’t know anything about what’s going on?
Heck, even if we didn’t randomly pick Medic, what if we picked Owain? He had three votes too because he likes creepy crawlies? I guess? Which I don’t get, but hey, someone’s gotta stock up for ‘em, I guess...
It isn't the same. This "game"—it's one designed to be stacked against us. Why else would everyone be in such a panic? And why else would so little make sense? No one is meant to be good at it from the start.
[ he squeezes her shoulder before removing his hand and stepping back. ] ... But I, for one, understand everything a little better now, and what's expected of us. I'll do everything in my power to ensure they never vote for either of you two. I swear it.
...yeah. Yeah, that’s true. I guess I’m just gonna have to try and get better, huh? It’s no good to just sit around crying about how I can’t do it. I mean, it’s not totally hopeless yet, right?
Well, I'll admit I'm a little worried about you guys. Like, I'm fine. I just need to be more careful over here, because apparently you can die twice and then it's permanent? But I'm actually gonna be careful now that I've died once so.
You needn't worry, no matter what happens next we'll pull through. We must. For you, and for everyone else on the other side. [ But mainly for Cynthia. ]
